Engineering Training Council’ has taken young Engineers through regional competitions to national heats for WorldSkills International. Over 36 students representing Northern Ireland’s six regional colleges and industry took part in the Engineering competitions, which test their design and engineering skills as they progress to the WorldSkillsUK heats. If successful in the heats, students will qualify for SquadUK for the Worldskills 2014 competition in Germany.

The WorldSkills Competition is the biggest skills competition in the world and is held every two years by WorldSkills International. Competitors compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. Medallions for Excellence are also awarded to competitors who achieve the International standard.

Claire Balmer from the Engineering Training Council said, “This is the third year that ETCNI has taken a co-ordinating role behind Engineering Skills Competitions in Northern Ireland.  We are privileged to work with a team of dedicated lecturers and experts across four disciplines as well as the 36 competitors who have come from Further Education and Industry to benchmark their skills against each other.  ETCNI have worked in partnership with the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) and Further Education to provide this opportunity to young people across Northern Ireland and feel that the recent talent resulting from competitions such as this should be promoted and showcased at a world skills level. SERC hosted the Industrial Electronics arm of the competition very successfully with competitors from SERC, BMC and NRC.”
