Report on STEM Review Released by DEL

Date:06/10/2009

The importance of science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) to wealth creation and the quality of life is almost universally accepted the world over. Yet against this background the trend has been falling numbers in students studying STEM subjects, increasing fears of a decline in STEM status among society as well as careers in Stem subjects appearing less attractive.

In Northern Ireland a STEM review has been underway with a final report from the working groups published in 2009.  Some of the issues dealt with include:

  • There is a growing STEM supply and demand mismatch.
  • Decline in uptake of STEM subjects especially science and mathematics.
  • Shortage of quality STEM teachers.
  • Inadequate careers advice for STEM students.
  • Science no longer compulsory in schools in Northern Ireland.

A number of recommendations are currently being very positively considered and one of these relates to the possibility of appointing a Chief STEM Adviser for Northern Ireland reporting to Government.
