Name: Sarah Floyd
Age: 20
Employer: Crossen Engineering
 
Sarah's interest in Engineering began at school after a placement period with an engineering company. She is working towards a GNVQ Advanced Engineering and NVQ Level 2 Engineering.
Crossen Engineering designs and manufactures Press Tools, Jigs and Moulds.

Sarah's daily tasks include using equipment such as Mills, Lathes, and drilling machines.

For Sarah the benefits of being on this apprenticeship programme means she learns new skills everyday.

In the future Sarah hopes to own her own business.


Name: Barrett Young
Age: 24
Employer: Langford Lodge Engineering
 
Barrett's interest in engineering came from his brother who works in the industry. He has just completed an apprenticeship with Langford Lodge and is now a Computer Numerically Controlled Machine Operator.

He believes the programme has made him more employable and given him 'hands on' experience as well as earning a wage.

In the future Barrett would like to start up his own business.


Name: Julie O'Boyle
Age: 19
Employer: FG Wilson
 
The opportunities available in engineering and the chance to gain more qualifications and experience, are what encouraged Julie to join the Modern Apprenticeship Programme.

Julie's day to day tasks involve internal wiring of diesel generators and control panels in FG Wilson.

The benefits for Julie are that she is not restricted to an office, doing the same tasks on a daily basis. In engineering she is able to develop experiences in a wide variety of areas.

In the future Julie hopes to become a fully qualified engineer.


Name: Gavin Hamilton
Age: 22
Employer: R&R Engineering
 
While taking part in the apprenticeship programme Gavin achieved a National Diploma in Engineering and a Higher National Certificate in Electrical/Electronic engineering while working as a Computer Aided Design Technician for R&R Engineering.

His day to day tasks include producing Computer Aided Design drawings, ordering equipment, preparing estimations and compiling documentation.

He believes the apprenticeship has given him a better chance of getting a job in the future as he now has years of experience in a working environment.

In the future Gavin would like to become a Design Engineer.


Name: Ursula McCrory - Technical Apprentice
Age: 20
Employer: Teleflex Medical - Lurgan
 
Ursula grew up on a farm surrounded by machinery and equipment. She excelled in technology whilst a pupil at St Marys College, Lurgan and decided at that stage, a practical route to her career in engineering would be more beneficial to her.

Prior to joining the Modern Apprenticeship Programme, Ursula completed a BTEC National Diploma at Armagh Institute of Further & Higher Education, this was an excellent foundation to her Modern Apprenticeship.

Ursula is now employed as a Technical Apprentice with Teleflex Medical in Lurgan, who supply systems and component solutions to medical device manufacturers around the world. She is working towards NVQ Level 3 in Technical Services and a Higher National Certificate in Manufacturing. Ursula’s main responsibilities include providing technical support to the production department by diagnosing, resolving and improving the yield rate of the product and validating both the manufacturing process and the product.


Name: Brian McClure - Mechatronics Apprentice
Age: 23
Employer: Montupet UK Ltd - Dunmurry
 
Brian began a modern apprenticeship after realising that his university course was not going to lead him to a career he wanted. He left university after only one year to join the Modern Apprenticeship Programme.

He is now in his 3rd year of an apprenticeship with Montupet (UK) Ltd, who specialise in the design and manufacture of aluminium components for the automotive industry. Brian is involved in a number of projects and activities including producing electrical drawings using CAD (Computer Aided Design) and carrying out maintenance on the machinery.

Brian believes Modern Apprenticeships are the best way of achieving further education and practical experience as well as getting paid.
